FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
At Nocturne House, we don’t delegate creativity to algorithms. All writing, editing, and creative refinement is performed by seasoned humans—our editors, designers, and authors. Of course, we leverage technology where it enhances our workflow—typesetting tools, editorial tracking, project management systems—but no AI makes editorial decisions. As always, our commitment remains to human insight and passion.
No, you do not need an agent to publish with Nocturne House. We accept direct submissions from authors and review every manuscript on its own merits. Whether you’re represented or not, what matters most is the strength of your work and your readiness to move forward professionally. If the manuscript is right, we’ll take it seriously—no gatekeepers required.
Of course! At Nocturne House, we offer a full range of professional publishing services for authors who want to bring their book to life independently. Whether you’re planning to self-publish, pitch to another press, or simply want your manuscript refined by a professional team, we can help.
We treat every project with the same care and standards we apply to our signed titles. If you’re serious about your work and want it done right, we’re here to support you.
Yes—we accept submissions year-round across all of our imprints. However, our publishing calendar follows a seasonal structure, so titles are typically scheduled for release during industry-standard launch windows: Spring (April), Summer (June), Fall (September), and Winter (December). Submitting earlier increases the chances of being considered for an upcoming season. Every manuscript is reviewed with care, regardless of when it arrives.
We consider manuscripts based on a combination of quality, clarity of vision, author readiness, and seek titles that fit within our publishing priorities. We’re open to a wide range of voices and genres, but every submission must demonstrate thoughtful execution, a compelling reason for existing, and the potential to connect with readers in a comprehensive way.
We don’t accept nearly every manuscript we receive—but we do give each one serious consideration. If your work is sincere, well-developed, and aligned with a meaningful purpose, it has a place in the conversation. Let's talk.
Absolutely! We work with first-time authors all the time. What matters isn’t how many books you’ve written—it’s whether this one is worth publishing. If your manuscript is strong, focused, and meaningful, we’ll take it seriously. Everyone starts somewhere. If you’re ready to bring something real to the table, we’re ready to take a look. Come on in!
No—we don’t believe in trapping our authors. Our contracts are specific to each book, and if you choose to leave within the first year, you can do so by paying a $2,500 rights reversion fee. This helps offset the significant investment we make upfront—typically between $3,000 and $7,000 per title. After the first year, you’re free to leave at any time without penalty. We want our authors to stay because they trust our process.
Timelines depend on the imprint and publishing model you’re working under.
For Nocturne House specifically, our titles follow a timeline of 4 to 8 months from contract to shelf. This includes editorial development, design, marketing preparation, and strategic release scheduling. While efficient, the process remains focused on long-term quality and relevance.
Our titles are distributed nationally and made available to bookstores through major wholesale channels. While placement isn’t guaranteed—since each store chooses its own inventory—we provide everything needed to make your book retail-ready and discoverable. Additionally, we do our best to make sure that your books are carried by as many outlets as possible.
